World Press Freedom Day celebrated May 3

World Press Freedom Day is celebrated on May 3 worldwide. The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed World Press Freedom Day in 1993, following a recommendation of UNESCO’s General Conference. This day gives an opportunity to celebrate the fundamental principles of press freedom; to evaluate press freedom, to defend the media from attacks on their independence and to pay tribute to journalists who have lost their lives in the line of duty. World Press Freedom Day is an annual reminder to the international community that the freedom of press and the freedom of expression are the major rights vested in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
